“Parts Work”, Book Recommendation, & A Podcast

I’ve really fallen in love lately with Richard Schwartz’s model of therapy called Internal Family Systems or “parts work.”

Have you ever found yourself saying things like, “A part of me really wants to be successful, but another part of me wants to scream forget it!” —- those are examples of “parts.” Parts of us that have created their own persona, initially with the best of intentions, usually to help us survive, keep us safe, prevent us from feeling overwhelming emotions, etc. But, at some point, these coping mechanisms aren’t needed, and we find these parts are often holding us back in some way.

When I met, Kt Sapita, one of our mental health therapists, she recommended the book “Unburdened Eating” (you can find it linked in the Amazon storefront in this portal) and lo and behold, it uses the IFS model to help heal the parts of us that are driving us sabotage our best efforts.

ChatGPT found this gem of a podcast for me the other day. It’s an interview with Richard Schwartz, founder of the Internal Family Systems model. Not only does he describe it in great detail in a way that’s easily understandable, he also performs a live session on the podcast host!

It’s about an 90 minute listen, but well worth every minute.

Happy healing,

Dottie
